International Music Professionals Explore Brazilian Music Through Projeto Imagem e Comprador 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Nine music specialists from 5 countries spent 10 days in August of 2007 discovering new music in four Brazilian regions. The international participants attended showcases and seminars in the cities of São Paulo, Goiânia, Fortaleza and Salvador da Bahia. The program, known as Project Imagem e Comprador (Image and Buyers) was created by BM&A (Brasil Musica & Artes), an association that works to promote Brazilian music abroad, with support from APEX (Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), which is a special department of SEBRAE (Brazilian Support Service to Micro and Small Enterprises).

The nine professionals who participated in 2007 are Marc Benaïche of world music site Mondomix (France), Pat Berry of world music label Six Degrees Records (USA), independent publicist Jody Gillett (UK), Beverly Koec...

Jazz Legend Max Roach Dies at 83 PDF Print E-mail
Drummer and percussion virtuoso Max Roach died on August 16, 2007 in New York. He was born on January 10, 1924 in New Land, North Carolina. The Roach family later relocated to Brooklyn, New York. Maxwell studied the piano with his aunt at the Baptist Church and at 8 years of age starting playing the drum set. At age 17 Roach performed with Duke Ellington and stated “Whether I could play or not, they thought I could play, because I’d been with the master”. Roach a master in his own imaginative way demonstrated his ethnic spirituality by various contributions to bebop, hard bop and jazz. Roach was part of the musical family associated with Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Mingus, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins & Irakere and more. Berlin Band 17 Hippies Talks About New Release Heimlich PDF Print E-mail
Bloomington (Indiana), USA - The latest album by 17 Hippies features ukulele and a Persian hammered dulcimer—played by a former heavy metal drummer—together with an acoustic Turkish take of the hip hop classic “Apache”. Latin Multi-Instrumentalist Mario Rivera Dies in New York PDF Print E-mail
On August 10th, 2007, we had the passing of the sidemen of sidemen, Mario Rivera. He was 68 and died of bone cancer. Rivera was a talented artist, playing tenor, alto, baritone, and soprano saxophone, as well as the flute and a host of other instruments including the timbales, vibraphone & jazz scatting. Mario performed many years with Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, and performed legendary solos for Eddie Palmieri. Of Dominican descent, known as El Comandante, I remember Mario once listening to a Walkman telling Tito, “hey you gotta listen to this hot tune!”
