The recent months were rather eventful for Andrea Gerák in between joyful travels and performances, medical examinations found she had cervical cancer . The Hungarian singer ,and her family, was struck with the news . It was a surprise, for Andrea radiates vitality in her closer and broader environ alike. They tried to keep a low profile about it. The public did not notice any signs of an illness at her concerts.
In January 2008, a successful operation was carried out, whereby surgeons removed the affected part in a way that no residue of the disease remained present. Therefore no further medical treatment is needed, only regular check-ups.

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle presents for six nights, Grammy-winning Latin jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri. Band members are Eddie Palmieri (piano), Conrad Herwig (trombone), Michael Rodriguez (trumpet), Vincent "Little Johnny" Rivero (congas) Orlando Vega (bongo), Yosvany Terry (alto saxophone), José Claussell (timbales), and Luques Curtis (bass). Set times Tuesday and Wednesday are at 7:30PM, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30PM and 9:30PM and Sunday at 7:30PM. Doors open at 6PM Tuesday and 5:30PM Wednesday - Sunday.

Spirits were high last night at the Austin Music Awards last night, where Atash was honored with the award for Best World Music Band of 2007-8, followed by a celebratory set at the Red Fez featuring Mohammad Firoozi, Christian Fernandez, Dylan Jones, John Moon, Roberto Riggio, Alseny Sylla, Aboubakar Sylla, and special guests Bryan Austin on drums and Indrajit Banerjee on sitar.

Sephardic Music Master Samy Al-Maghribi Dies in Canada |

Oud player Salomon Amzallag, better known as Samy Al-Maghribi, died March 9, 2008. Born in Morocco in 1922, he soon became a well-known figure in Andalusian music and after emigrating to Canada, served for many years as the Cantor of Montreal's Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue.
After retiring, he spent several years in Israel where he worked with the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra and eventually returned to Canada.
"He was a very fine singer, instrumentalist, and composer, highly appreciated in both the Jewish and the Muslim worlds, and a great person," said ethnomusicologist Judith Cohen, who studied oud with Samy Al-Maghribi. Read more at: |

Scottish singer will be performing with her band April 2 at the Long View Center in Raleigh. Scottish-born singer/songwriter Emily Smith first made her mark on the European music scene when she won the 2002 BBC Radio Scotland's Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year Award. In the same year she formed her own band and has since toured throughout Europe and Australia. In 2003 Emily graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with an Honors degree in Scottish music. During this time she developed her skills on piano and accordion and established her own singing style drawing on the many sources available to her.
