 J. R. Ransom has worked in music for almost thirty years. He is an exceptional songwriter, with an expressive voice and an easy, relaxed guitar style. His songs are rich with folk poetry and have often been described as stories or pictures. J. R. Ransom first walked on stage at the Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich village in 1966. Since then he's done a bunch of work in and around the music field. He's worked in audio engineering, record production, professional sound, home sound and performing. J. R. Ransom spent seven years as president of the independent Biscuit City record label and operated a recording studio in Denver for 10 years.
His music is in the tradition of early Dylan, Tim Hardin, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Ian Tyson, Jesse Colin Young, Tom Rush, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Leonard Cohen, and others. He began performing at The Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village in 1966. Since then, he has performed hundreds of times in clubs, concerts, festivals, and on radio and television.
As president and head of production at Denver's Biscuit City Records, in the Seventies, he was also deeply involved in production of Folk, Jazz, Bluegrass, Irish, Swing, and Light Rock. These musical styles and feelings have been incorporated into his own albums and performances.
Biscuit City Records released three J. R. Ransom albums: "Just Come Along for the Ride" (1974); "The Escape of J. D. Mackenzie and other Songs" (1976); and "Ransom Notes" (1977). Unfortunately, the master recording of these albums have disappeared.
In 1978, he toured several cities in Brasil, sponsored by Coca-Cola. In 1983 his fourth album "Dreams of the Skies" was released on the Blue Star label. J. R.'s fifth album "True to You" was recorded in Taos and is available from Taos Music & Art, Inc.. J. R. Ransom's songs are published by Surada Songs (BMI).
During the Eighties, J. R. worked in home and professional audio with prestigious ListenUp Audio/Video in Denver. During the early Nineties, J. R. was deeply involved with television marketing of his album "True to You". Advertising tests were run in Albuquerque and Taos, in 1994, during Conan O'Brien's show on NBC. In 1996 recordings were done for an, as yet, unreleased set of recording - "The Secret Beach Tapes - Above Secret Beach."
Since 1996, he has been involved with global web development, Apple computer network development, and study of Indian music. He is currently president of Taos Music & Art, Inc., developer of taosplaza.com group of co-op style "community sites" and archiving & delivery of sound and motion entertainment and edutainment data. For the past several years, J. R. Ransom has been involved with Indian Bhajan and Kirtan Singing and Indian Styles in India and America. J. R.
